"Added On" to At-Fault Liability Limits
If you get in an accident with an at-fault underinsured driver, your Uninsured Motorist
coverage limit will be added to the other driver’s Liability coverage limit
to pay for the damages. If the damages are more than the combined limits, you
will have to pay the difference.
Example
Your Uninsured Motorist Limit: $100,000
At-Fault Driver’s Liability Limit: $50,000
Combined Limits: $100,000 + $50,000 = $150,000
Damages: $175,000
Damages Minus Combined Limits: $175,000 - $150,000 = $25,000
Amount Not Covered: $25,000
“Reduced By” At-Fault Liability Limits
If you get in an accident with an at-fault underinsured driver, the difference between
your Uninsured Motorist coverage limit and the other driver’s Liability coverage
limit (plus the other driver’s Liability coverage limit) will pay for the damages.
If the damages are more, you will have to pay the difference.
Example
Your Uninsured Motorist Limit: $100,000
At-Fault Driver’s Liability Limit: $50,000
Difference in Limits: $100,000 - $50,000 = $50,000
Damages: $175,000
Damages Minus (Difference in Both Limits + At-Fault Limit): $175,000 – ($100,000) = $75,000
Amount Not Covered: $75,000
